SMD Plans to Release AMOLED Plastic Panel for Mobile Display 2010/07/19 By Yang Jong-suk Samsung Mobile Display (SMD) will launch a mobile display installed with AMOLED (active-matrix organic light-emitting diode) plastic panel on the universal board within two years. By switching to AMOLED plastic panel, product’s display becomes unbreakable, valuable, innovative, and safe. SMD plans to place a TFT (thin film transistor) on the plastic panel and to replace the existing vinyl protection sheet with PI (polyimide) film to avoid residue upon light emission. An industry expert said, “SMD’s technology development is going forward at a speed faster than expected, which makes it more urgent for them to obtain a price competitiveness stably for mass-production from year 2012.” He added, “The growing demand for thinner and lighter plastic AMOLED panel by the mobile phone market is also an important factor to monitor.”
