Korea¡¯s NGN Technology Being Adopted as International Standard
2008/01/30 By Lee Eun-yong
Korea will play a leading role in setting the international standard for the next generation network, which covers all the communications network available in the world ranging from the copper line to the advanced mobile network.
On January 29, the Ministry of Information and Communication and the Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA) said that the ITU-T adopted the 4 recommendations for the next generation network submitted by Korea as the international standard and approved 8 cases in the study groups at its recent congress held in Seoul along with its 30 member countries.
Korea accounted for 66% in the newly adopted international standards, 6 cases, and 36% in the approved recommendations by the SG, 22 cases.
Team Chief Kim Sun of the TTA Information and Communications Team said, ¡°Korea accounts for 30% in the NGN relevant activities including the leadership in ITU-T, the number of technical journals and the number of adopted standards. Korea will take the lead in the NGN technology as well as the market.¡±
He added, ¡°Recently, China has emerged in setting the NGN standard. And their number of technical journal is reaching to our level. However, it is still far behind us in the number of adopted standards.¡±
The Seoul congress adopted the model and scenario for the web-service based NGN fusion service, the requirement and the structure of the NGN billing system, the user profile of the NGN network and the scenario for the fusion service of the multi-network and multi-application. These standards are expected to consist the essential part of the NGN service. Also, the IPv6 based NGN signal framework and other 8 cases approved in the SG will be adopted as the international standard after being assessed by the international engineers.
Team Chief Kim Jae-yung of the Ministry of Information and Communication Infrastructure Policy said, ¡°Those 8 cases approved by ITU-T SG will be adopted after two to three years of technical review.¡±
In addition, the service requirement for the ubiquitous sensor network (USN) middleware and the scenario of the fusion service for the high quality VoIP service were also adopted as the draft recommendation by ITU-U SG.
The MIC and the TTA will also plan to get approval for 6 drafts including the NGN performance measuring in order to maintain its leading role in the future technology for communications. To this end, it will join forces with the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, KT and Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT).
